Pink Floyd, The Wizard of Oz, and Yoga… In concert!
 
Few albums ever achieve the unanimous recognition of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon. Released in 1973, the 43-minute long concept album tackled massive themes - greed, conflict, the passage of time, and personal conflict - and propelled Pink Floyd into the echelons of rock immortality. Sometime in April 1995, an internet user in a Pink Floyd discussion group mentioned simultaneously playing “The Wizard of Oz” (sans sound, starting at the MGM lion’s third roar) and The Dark Side of the Moon, would yield a slew of seemingly synchronized moments.

Matching a movie to an unrelated album is known as synchronicity. The practice of yoga also lends similar secretive blends, in rhythm and in breath; when you least expect them… but when you need them the most. Join Erika for an evening of synchronization between all-levels yoga, DSotM, and The Wizard of Oz.

Yoga Nidra is a highly relaxed and deep state of meditation that progresses through the many stages or layers of the mind, promoting healing and union within. Practiced in a cozy and supported reclined position, students will be guided gently through the physical, emotional, and mental layers of the being. It is a journey through stillness and mindfulness in order to gain a greater sense of clarity, calmness, and serenity. You will experience sensations that can sometimes bring you to a higher form of understanding oneself while also bringing relief and healing to chronic and acute conditions - whether they be physical or mental. In this workshop we will discuss the discovery of your heartfelt desire, intention, and explore affirmations. You will then be guided through a series of stretching postures to prepare the body for stillness followed by a 45-minute Yoga Nidra meditation. This class is a profound experience and the benefits can continue for weeks after a session. You will leave this workshop not only feeling more refreshed than you ever have, but with a higher sense of daily awareness that you can take with you wherever you go!

Mysore style is the traditional method taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, named after the small city where he lived for much of his life. In this style, the method of Ashtanga Yoga is transmitted from the teacher directly to the individual student through physical adjustments and minimal verbal cueing.
 
Gradually, the student is able to memorize a series of postures and breaths that comprise the series. Once the student memorizes and becomes proficient at a pose, s/he is taught the next pose and so on until the Primary Series is complete. When the student is firmly grounded in its techniques, she will move on to the intermediate series, and further. There are six series in Ashtanga Yoga; at this time there is one one person, R Sharth Jois, Guruji's grandson, who practices all six series.

This all levels workshop helps introduce this system of yoga to new students, and advanced students alike.

We can use our yoga practice as our expression, as an extension to connect to our life off our mat. In taking time to let go of the world around us and find our breath and our flow, we learn how to truly move with intention. We become open to the inspiration, strength, and flexibility that always lives in us.

This three hour workshop will begin with a centering pranayama practice, move through an extended all-levels vinyasa flow, and create the space for us to find our inspiration, strength, and flexibility. The practice will be structured to cater to all levels of practitioner (though a familiarity with the practice of vinyasa is encouraged) and will allow plenty of time to both challenge your limits, and take pause to reflect when needed. Show up with an open mind about what you can really learn about yourself on your mat, and a journal to record any ideas, epiphanies, mantras, etc, that your movement might inspire.

Alignment refers to the precise way in which the body should be positioned in each yoga pose to achieve the maximum benefit from the pose, increasing strength and flexibility. This workshop, taught by Michael Jones, is for continuing and advanced students seeking to refine and deepen their understanding of the yoga practice. Alignment principles will be taught with emphasis on how the posture should feel rather than how they look; as no two bodies are alike. Additionally, we will focus on the linkage of breathe with the movement (flow from pose to pose), a foundational element of vinyasa.
